On the cover: Harriet Tubman (1822-1913), a conductor on the Underground Railroad (a network of antislavery activists and safe houses) during the 1850s in the U.S. She was born into slavery on Marylands eastern shore, and endured the harsh existence of a field hand, including brutal beatings. In 1849 she fled her enslavement, leaving her husband (John Tubman) and family behind in order to escape. Despite a bounty on her head, she returned to the South at least 19 times to lead her family, friends and hundreds of other people to freedom via the Underground Railroad. The front of the new U.S. $20 bill will bear her portrait.
